Officers were called to Carlisle Avenue at 4.50pm following reports the man had suffered injuries to his back, chest and hands consistent with a bladed weapon being used. It is believed the incident took place on playing fields off Chester Avenue.

Enquiries are ongoing but it is believed at this stage it was a targeted attack.

The man has been taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries. He is in currently in a stable condition.

An investigation is underway and house-to-house and CCTV enquiries are being carried out in the local area.

Road closures are in place in the surrounding area to allow for an investigation to be carried out.

Detective Inspector Gary Stratton said: “We are looking into the circumstances leading up to this assault and I would appeal for anyone who was in the vicinity of Carlisle Avenue or Chester Avenue between around 4.30pm and 5pm who saw anyone or anything suspicious to contact us as they may have information
which is vital to our investigation.
